Beginning our 8th Year

I think I have started the past 4 or 5 newsletters with the words 'I can't quite believe'...and again I need to say I can't quite believe this is the start of our 8th year of Out of the Box.

It really has been an incredible journey. We have worked with thousands of children and tonnes of churches and other organisations. We have travelled thousands of miles across Scotland in our little blue van working alongside some amazing people who are passionate about sharing the Gospel with children and young people.

We have a committed Board of Directors who help us run the company. On the board we have Dr Alasdair Morrison, Eileen Morrison, Rev Scott McRoberts, Andrew Wilson, Gillian Gunn, Rev Adrian Varwell, Margaret Varwell, Elaine Watt and Alister Mackinnon. We also have Stephen Crantson who is our Company Secretary. A huge thank you to them and their enthusiasm for our project.

At our most recent board meeting we opened with thinking about ambition and Paul's ambition to take the good news of Jesus to places that have never heard it before. Let's pray that Out of the Box has at least another 8 years to continue creatively sharing the Gospel across Scotland.

Thank you for your support. Enjoy the rest of this Newsletter. Hope you like the new format.

Children's Worker
Out of the Box (Scotland) Ltd
Back in February, during the school holidays, we had 22 young people attending our third AMP'D event. The young people all worked hard during the week in each of their chosen streams, either Puppets, Acting or Dance. The whole group were part of an AMP'D choir and performed together at the 'End of Week' showcase along with performing the work they were doing in their streams.

We had Simeon Ewing, Children's Worker from Hilton Church, leading our Bible teaching sessions each morning. It was great to have Simeon involved.

We are currently in the thought process stage for our fourth AMP'D event which will hopefully take place during the February school holidays next year. We will keep you posted.

For more info about AMP'D please check out our website. here you will also be able to book for the 2017 event.
We also produced the above video during the week. If you haven't already seen it then please do click on it and the picture above.
You won't be disappointed, I promise.

SPREE in the Borders

We were invited back to SPREE in the Borders, a youth weekend event run by Urban Saints at Whithaugh Park in Newcastleton.

This would be our third time at SPREE and it was great to be asked back. We were leading the Bible teaching programme for everyone in P5 to P7. We had a great number of kids coming along to our tent who all got involved with the action songs, drama and the silly games and challenges.

The theme for the weekend was Heroes and we focused our teaching on the character of Daniel.

Check out the Facebook Page for Spree Scotland for more info and pictures from the event.

Summer 2016 saw Chris traveling to Aberdeenshire for three weeks leading our own 'Navigate' Holiday Club material in Gardenstown, Crimond and New Deer.

We had a great number of kids at each event and all the volunteers helping were just great. It is such a privilege to be involved with churches in this outreach to the children in their community. A great joy and pleasure.

If you would be interested in having Out of the Box come and lead a 'Navigate' Holiday Club at your church in 2017 then please do get in touch with us. Please contact Chris on

Some other things we have done recently

We have regular contact with a number of schools locally where we lead assemblies.
We had the opportunity to lead a session at a Church of Scotland conference back in May.
We ran a puppet workshop for the young people at Inshes church.
We performed 3 shows at the Free North Church during the Inverness Classic Car Roadshow.
Chris was an assistant team leader at an SU camp during the Easter holidays and again during the summer holidays.
Carol ran a craft club at Hilton Church during a week in the summer.
Carol also attended a course with Riding Lights on sound and lighting in a theater setting.
We attended a youth and children's work conference where we got an opportunity to network with other children's workers and organisation across Scotland.
Chris led a Holiday Club reunion morning in Crimond.
We led a Kids Club session at Smithton Free Church in Inverness.
We dressed as Super Heroes and made a DVD for SPREE in the Borders.

Brand new

'Steve the shepherd' is the title for our new Christmas production that we are currently working on with the Todd brothers, Matthew and Philip.

We are super excited about this collaboration with the Todd's. We have been talking about doing this for a number for years and it's great to actually be doing it.

We are touring around schools in the Highlands during the week beginning Monday 12th December. This is the only week we will be in the Highlands with this production. We then head to Glasgow for a few days before Christmas where we'll visit a few schools and take the production to some churches along the way.
The production will last around 50 minutes and will follow the story of a Shepherd called Steve and will feature some original songs, live action, puppets and lots more. Our diary is already pretty full for the 10 days of our tour. We do have a few spaces left so if you would be interested in having this production at your school or church then please get in touch with Chris.

Churches and other Christian organisations, are you looking for something different as an outreach to children and families in your local community?

Out of the Box can help. We will run a program lasting around an hour featuring action songs, games, challenges, Bible stories, interactive drama and of course lots of puppets.

You may then want to provide some refreshments for folks and spend some time chatting.

For more info and costs please contact Chris Watt.
Working with children and young people is an exhilarating experience; often surprising, never predictable, sometimes difficult, always requiring effort. We all face similar challenges whether in school, church or during the holidays.

GROW aims to offer volunteer children’s and youth workers, aged 16 and over, from many contexts and backgrounds, the opportunity to:
  • Learn new skills
  • Share fresh ideas
  • Be encouraged and inspired
  • Think through big issues in children’s ministry
  • Pick up the latest resources
We want children and young people to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and grow a dynamic relationship with him - investing in training means that we can all do this more effectively.

GROW is taking place on Saturday 17th September 2016, at Greyfriars Free Church, Inverness from 10am till 4pm. Cost is £5. For more info please click here.

GROW is being organised by a group of full-time Christian children’s and youth workers from across Inverness. The group includes people who work in local churches (including the Church of Scotland, the Free Church of Scotland and independent churches as well as staff from Scripture Union Scotland, Highlands and Islands Youth for Christ and Out of the Box who are administering the event.
So, it's my turn for a little adventure. I've always wanted to take part in something like this. My goal would be the London Marathon but maybe that's a little ambitious, so I'll kick off with the Baxters River Ness 10k on Sunday 25th September 2016.

Running doesn't come easy to me and it really is a challenge getting out there. The longest I have run so far is just under 5km, so I have a long way to go to reach 10k. I know I am going to struggle with motivation and stamina but I am determined to do this.

I would really appreciate your support in any way you can. Primarily though your financial support would be much appreciated. :-)

Here's why:

As you will have read above, we are currently writing a brand new Schools Christmas Production. This new project will see us collaborating with Actor Philip Todd and Musician Matthew Todd, whom you may recognise from our AMP'D events. Both Matthew and Phil will not only be involved in the writing of our new production but also in the performing of it to schools both in Inverness and Glasgow during the month of December.

A project like this costs money and we do aim to charge schools for this production but I am keen to raise as much money as I can in order to keep the costs to schools as low as possible. We really want this production to be accessible to schools and keeping the cost low will mostly definitely help to do that.

Please would you consider supporting me in the 10km run and in turn supporting our brand new Christmas production for schools.

Many thanks

Prayer focus

We recognise the power of prayer and have felt God's hand over our project since the beginning. Would you join us in prayer for the work we are doing with churches and schools across Scotland.

Here are a few things to get you started:
  • Please pray for the Grow conference in September that it would be an encouraging time where youth and children's worker can meet together and learn from each other and be inspired for their own work with children and young people.
  • Please pray for the work we did over the summer and for the children who heard the Good News of Jesus. Pray that lives would be impacted by what they heard and what God can do in their lives if they let Him.
  • Please pray in thanks for the Board of Out of the Box and the time and epertise they bring to our project,
  • Please continue to pray for safety as we travel all over Scotland, especially when it comes to the dark cold winter months.
  • Please pray in thanks for 8 years of this project and for the next 8.
Thank you.
