Who are Out of the Box?

Out of the Box (Scotland) Ltd is an Inverness based Scottish Charity (SC 035701), set up to share the Gospel using puppetry, song and various other forms of performing and creative arts.

Whether it is through a school assembly, workshop, holiday club, outreach event, children’s club or online, we seek to share the truth of the Gospel while seeking to support children’s physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well-being.

More than that we want to encourage and enable those who work with children in their local context. We have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside hundreds of volunteers from churches and Christian organisations, inspiring them to think creatively about their work with children.

We are so privileged to have shared with thousands of children about Jesus and how much they are loved by God.

Board of Directors

Out of the Box is run by a Board of seven Directors and a secretary who provide their services on a voluntary basis. The Directors and staff meet once a quarter to pray together and discuss all aspects of the work, including the practical aspects of running and financing a limited company. Out of the Box would certainly not be where it is now without the support of these enthusiastic and gifted folks.

Directors: Mike Robertson (Chair), Gillian Gunn, Elaine Watt, David Humphris, Alex MacQueen and Matthew Donn.

Secretary: Stephen Cranston

Out of the Box was created by Chris Watt and took up the full-time position of Creative Director in September 2009.

Chris writes:

I moved to Inverness when Elaine and I married in 2003. I love living and working in the Highlands.

I first got into puppetry when attending a Children’s Ministry Conference many years ago and going along to a basic puppetry workshop. The workshop opened my eyes to the possibilities of using puppets to help share the Gospel. I never thought for one second, however, that it would become part of my job and that I would get to travel across Scotland with a suitcase of puppets in the back of my van.

I also can’t believe that I have been doing this now for nearly 17  years. Wow. What a joy.

A few years ago I wondered about building my own puppet. After watching a number of YouTube videos and sourcing all the right materials, I gave it a go. I have made a handful of puppets to date and have so enjoyed the process. The photo shows my most recent creations.

The purple one is Cooper the Conductor and features in our new Holiday Club material, Amplify.

The blue one is Sparky and he comes with me to Bright Sparks, a children’s club we help to run in Drumnadrochit.
